Andrew Barger's anthology is an entertaining and informative representation of how the ancient werewolf legends were first transferred into prose. Most of the stories are set in the Dark Middle Ages, and some attempt to use the language of the times to exemplify and make the tales more atmospheric and representative of the times they are recording. This works, but some the sentences need to be read over again to get the meaning. Barger annotates several obscure words and phrases which helps.

All of the stories are worth reading, however my favorite is author Leitch Rechie's The Man-Wolf. This tale about an unhappily married medieval Knight and his encounter with night fairies appears to be a send up of traditional romance, marriage and religous institutions. Towards the end this 1831 story actually resembles a Ernst Lubitsch cinematic Hollywood comedy produced 100 years later.

The most disturbing of the bunch is Captain Frederick Marryat's The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains. The were(or she)wolf of the title is an especially vicious one. However, what haunts a modern reader is the depiction of child abuse, more than the supernatural elements.

The only minor disappointment in the selections is that most of the tales deal more with lynconthropy as a psychological problem, and an ignorant mass hysteria phenomenon rather than a supernatural menace. All the selections are definitely fairy tales, but not all them actually feature a shape shifting monster.

LOVING this book. I have an obbsession with penny dreadfuls.
Was really hoping to find a book on Werewolf stories for the years 1794-1853, dog gone it! This one will do. This one will HAVE to do.
Although lycanthropy and shapeshifting legends have existed for countless centuries, werewolves are not considered a staple of the Gothic literary tradition. Editor Andrew Barger gives us evidence to the contrary with his collection of the best of the wolf stories from the early modern period. Many of these stories have not been republished in over 150 years. There are more than just ghosts and vampires lurking in the 1800s!
