I would have been entertained by Bram's ingenious plot line and the remarkable use he makes of historical mileposts, from the Civil War to the great Coney Island Dreamland fire; trekking from Norfolk to New York to Constantinople over more than half a century. Those mileposts are parts of us through life's reading, travel, modern media. Colorful descriptions throughout give emotional and nostalgic thrills. Bravo to wonderful story telling! But the most joy came from immersing me in my great personal issues - race and its inexplicable importance in our society - my life's joys and fears in sexuality - and my regrets at living comfortably for 74 years within society's rules. My vicarious journey with Dr. August and his loves was an intellectual and erotic pleasure.
As a devoted fan of the author, I was late to read this epic and evocative tale. Yes, our narrator is troubled, and at times makes bad decisions. But the settings, from the post-Civil War South to New York, Constantinople, European cities, and once again New York, with Coney Island in all its early theatrical magic, brought history alive through the up-and-down career and experiences of a clairvoyant pianist, who sometimes fakes his connection to the spirit world.

Shifting from realistic historical settings to dream-state imagery, Bram's story spans a lifetime, from his early love for freed slave Isaac, to a manipulative boy, and into his later years with Isaac's wife and children. All along, he's trailed by a conniving 'journalist,' and endures the whims of audiences, from upper crust urbanites to sideshow hecklers.

The added focused perspective of his telling the tale through a character in the story offers a personal point of view.
Bram has once again entranced me. No writer today that I've encountered can better blend history, eroticism, and challenging, yet heartful characters together with fascinating, page-turning plots. I literally could not put it down. The climax was as shattering and beautiful as that of "Father of Frankenstein" (the basis of the film, "God and Monsters"). Bravo.
A brilliant story line set in the post Civil War era. Deals with racism and homophobia of the time, as well as comlex feelings. Very clever style as the main character is dictating this to his another person.

Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. It's the story of Augustus Fitzwilliam, a young musician who communicates with the spirit world through his piano. The book begins during the Civil War and spans over sixty years and several cities including Venice, Constantinople, Paris, and finally New York. At the heart of the story is his relationship with an ex-slave, Issac Kemp, and an uptight governess, Alice Pangborn. The book debates the ideas of race, religion, and love with timeless acuracy. So many of the arguments and viewpoints the characters have are so many of the same ones people are having today including the right to choose who you love, the difficulties in interracial relationships, sexual & racial prejudice, and religion vs spiritualism. The grand scope of the book, it's homoeroticism, and honest portrayal of race relations, reminded me so much of novelist Anne Rice's brilliant earlier works "Cry To Heaven" and "The Feast of All Saints". Reading this, it was easy to believe that it was a fascinating work of non-fiction and not something that sprang from the mind of one of the most imaginative writers in literature today. I highly recommend it!
Deftly weaves a timeline of social commentary, evolving gay sensibilities and engaging narrative so that my original eye-rolls at discovering the page count to be nearly 500 turned into quick squints as I periodically checked ahead to see how much more of this enchanting piece I could look forward to over the long weekend. The novel covers weighty issues like racism, self-discovery, homophobia, and xenophobia as well as enchanting ones like finding your muse, connecting with a soul mate, and learning to sing in the key of Life. And it turns things on their heads, often. You think you know something, but Bram slants it so you must look again, from a new angle -- the resulting impressions are profound. Perhaps what I found most endearing about the author was that he loved his characters, each and every one, no matter how flawed. Because of this, I could follow him down alleys where I might not ordinarily go. His modern, compact and muscular writing is offset by Victorian nods and half-smiles making it a blend of the best of both times. Fine job.
